Director Panos Cosmatos delivers this wild and vibrant fever dream. An event which successfully melds just enough retro rock'in roll batshit craziness with a highly likable Nick Cage, his strange and ugly yet weirdly attractive girlfriend and a group of hellraising cult freaks. Mandy is like an over the top metal concert, it needs a bit of warming up with the opening act but its style over substance appeal maintains interest from its opening moments until the whirlwind closing of med-evil revenge.

Mandy weaves a simple story of the love between Cage's character Red Miller and his title credited girl Mandy Bloom played by Andrea Riseborough. The couple live out their peaceful and practically isolated lives in their mountain-top lodge like abode. Only to have everything shatter around them as a hippie cult known as Children Of The New Dawn roll through.

The cults leader Jeremiah Sand played by Linus Roache happens to catch a glimpse of Mandy and is captivated by her. Sand becomes so obsessed by Mandy he sends one of his cronies by the name of Brother Swan played by Ned Dennehy to fetch her for him. With the aid of a group of demonic LSD induced bikers Jeremiah gets his wish but never bargained on Mandy's lover Miller to rise up and blaze a pah of death metal vengeance through the countryside like no other. Cheddar Goblins, an epic chainsaw battle this side of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Running Man plus all the soothing visual bliss just spills off the screen in dark tranquility.

After watching Mandy I'm convinced Cage has become a crazy force to be reckoned with, a role of instant cult status its so fucking gigantic in proportion. Mandy is such a great time, I had a bunch of fun watching it and taking it in as an experience of enveloping madness masked in this crazed artistic vision. It enthralled me to the point I consider it one of the best things I've seen in 2018 hands down. Its a simple revenge plot but how it is carried out, its quirks, flaws and genuine nature make it a winner in my opinion.

My rating: 5 out of 5
